Ziquejie is in Shuiche Town, Xinhua County, Loudi. At Ziquejie Terrace
you can see layers upon layers of terraces mapped on the hills like
green waves rolling among the mountains. Visitors will be astonished
that this was made by the ancient ancestors of the locals.
The 80,000-mu (5,333-ha) terraced fields, rising one upon another at an
elevation of 500 meters to 1,100 meters, are endowed with natural
self-irrigation and endless spring water.
Here you can appreciate the remains of ancient paddy culture and enjoy
the primitive simplicity of slash-and-burn cultivation and wood-block
houses.
According to research, the Terraced Fields which originated from Qin and
Han dynasties and developed in the Song Dynasty, have a long history of
over 2,000 years. They are the crystallization created by Miao, Yao,
Dong, and Han nationalities during their farming work. They are the
remains of ancient paddy culture, and fishing and hunting culture. The
fields reflect the greatness of the ancient Meishan farming
civilization. It is approved as a state-level scenic spot in 2005. And
in 2006 it was included in the world cultural and natural heritage list.
The terraced fields rise up the slopes.
It looks different in every season. In autumn, the golden paddies wave
in the wind, making a splendid harvest scene. (Photo/Yi Ran)
