The Chenzhou High-Tech Industrial Development Zone is located in the east downtown area of Chenzhou City, with a total area of 25.83 square kilometers. It was formerly known as the Hunan Chenzhou Shizhuyuan Nonferrous Metals Sci-Tech Industrial Park approved by the Hunan Provincial People's Government in April 2003 and the Chenzhou Export Processing Zone approved by the State Council in June 2005. In May 2008, the two parts were merged, implementing the "one institution with two plates" mechanism.
In March 2012, the Chenzhou Shizhuyuan Nonferrous Metals Sci-Tech Industrial Park was renamed as the Chenzhou High-Tech Industrial Development Zone. In August 2013, the Chenzhou Export Processing Zone was upgraded to the deputy-bureau-director level. In February 2015, the Chenzhou High-Tech Industrial Development Zone was upgraded to the national-level by the State Council. In December 2016, the Chenzhou Export Processing Zone was approved by the State Council to be integrated and optimized as the Chenzhou Comprehensive Bonded Zone under the management of the Chenzhou High-Tech Industrial Development Zone.
On September 24, 2020, the Chenzhou Area of the China (Hunan) Pilot Free Trade Zone was officially inaugurated, with an implementation area of 19.84 square kilometers (including 1.06 square kilometers of the Chenzhou Comprehensive Bonded Zone). The area is located in the planning area of the Chenzhou High-Tech Industrial Development Zone.
The zone strives to cultivate two leading industries, namely new generation electronic information technology and advanced equipment manufacturing, and one characteristic industry of nonferrous metal new materials. It has basically formed the advanced equipment manufacturing industrial cluster represented by SANY Renewable Energy Co., Ltd., Hunan Chenzhou Grain & Oil Machinery Co., Ltd., and Hunan Nongfu Machinery & Electronic Co., Ltd.; the new generation electronic information industrial cluster led by Delta Electronics, GiantSun Power, Grand-Pro Technology, and Huiyin Electronic Technology; and, the non-ferrous metal new materials industrial cluster led by Hunan Shizhuyuan Nonferrous Metals Co., Ltd., Chenzhou Jingui Silver Industry Co., Ltd., and Chenzhou Jincheng Environmental Protection & Technology Co., Ltd.
