Hunan has thoroughly implemented President Xi Jinping’s instructions on healthcare and epidemic prevention and control, deepened reform of the medicine and healthcare system, and improved quality and efficiency of medical service system. Works have been done in promoting full coverage of clinics in villages and general practitioners in townships and towns; expanding medical resources and improving medical care service; and, achieving major strategic success in fighting against the COVID-19 epidemic.
As of April 2022, the number of registered nurses in Hunan Province was 278,700. Over 80 percent of them have a junior college degree or above. The level of patients’ satisfaction with clinic and inpatient services respectively ranked fifth and ninth nationwide. The number of nurses increased and the structure optimized. From January 2020 to April 2022, the number of registered nurses in the province grew from 249,000 to 278,700, making a record increase of 12%. There are an average of 4.2 registered nurses for every 1,000 people. A growing number of nurses perused undergraduate, postgraduate, or doctoral education. Over 28 percent of the nurses around the province obtain a bachelor’s degree or above.
Nursing service turned to be more patient, clinic, and society-centered. The number of the nurses working in the primary-level medical institutions around the province increased from 64,280 in 2021 to 75,679 currently, making up about 27 percent of the province’s total.
Constant efforts have been made to expand nursing service, boost elderly care work, and enhance specific nursing service. There are now 40 Grade Ⅲ and more than 30 Grade Ⅱ hospitals providing nurse-led clinics in Hunan Province. The outpatient treatments of these nurse-led clinics amounted to 600,000 annually. One hundred and six hospitals piloted “Internet plus nursing” service, providing 26,190 treatments in total. (Data updated in May 2022)
Cooperative Medical Services
The Hunan Provincial People’s Government and the National Health Commission reached an agreement on jointly building a national medical center and a regional medical center in April 2021.
Ten high-level hospitals in Hunan will participate in the co-building tasks:
- The National Clinical Research Center for Mental Disorders of the Second Xiangya Hospital of Central South University, and the Brain Hospital of Hunan Province, will found a national psychologic medical center;
- The Xiangya Hospital, Second Xiangya Hospital, and Third Xiangya Hospital of Central South University, and the Hunan Provincial People’s Hospital, will jointly build a comprehensive regional medical center;
- The Xiangya Hospital of Central South University will lead to establish a regional medical center for neurology, orthopedics, and respiration;
- The Second Xiangya Hospital of Central South University will join hands with the Hunan Provincial People’s Hospital to construct a regional medical center for senile diseases, and with the Changsha Municipal First Hospital to build a regional medical center for infectious diseases; and,
- The Third Xiangya Hospital of Central South University and the Hunan Provincial Maternal and Child Health Care Hospital will found a regional medical center for maternal and child health care.
COVID-19 Epidemic Prevention and Control
As of February 17, 2022, 130 million doses of COVID-19 vaccines had been administered in Hunan. More than 52 million people have received a full course of vaccination. Following the requirements of the National Health Commission, Hunan will continue to promote COVID-19 vaccinations provincewide. Sequential booster vaccinations will be rolled out, in addition to the homologous booster shots, in a bid to ensure all people eligible for vaccination have access to it, and build province-wide immunity barrier.
