Hunan Approved for 2 New National GI Protection Demonstration Zones
On September 1, the National Intellectual Property Administration announced a list of the approved national geographical indication (GI) protection demonstration zones for 2021. There are 50 zones around the country on the list, including two in Hunan – one for Anhua dark tea, and the other for Baojing gold tea.
In addition to the Xinhuang National GI Protection Demonstration Zone which was approved in 2015, Hunan has three such zones so far.
These zones were authorized to protect the local GI products, based on certain industrial scale, social and economic benefits, relatively high standard of protection, regularized management, and high reputation. They are expected to play an exemplary and guiding role for the related industries in surrounding areas.
The approved zones will work further to improve standards, examination, quality control, and management system construction for the GI products, in a bid to elevate product quality and competitiveness. Protection will be further strengthened based on legal, administrative, economic, and technological means, to improve business environment. They will participate in international cooperation based on mutual recognition and protection of GI products, expand overseas markets, and help promote Hunan products to other provinces and the world.
Hunan has approved 285 GIs and 80 GI products so far, with an output value of nearly 9 billion yuan and helping 1.39 million impoverished people to get rid of poverty over the past five years. Hunan’s 7 GI products are included in the scope of mutual recognition and protection between China and European countries, including Anhua dark tea, Liuyang fireworks, Liling porcelain, Jiugui liquor, Guzhang Maojian tea, Yongfeng chili sauce, and Baojing gold tea, according to the EU-Chinese agreement on geographical indications. Six GI products – Yanling yellow peach, Shimen citrus, Anhua dark tea, Liuyang fireworks, Jietan tea, and Longhui lily bulb – made the list of GI protected products intention in Russia.
