Tujia Liuyueliu Folk Culture Event Held in Zhangjiajie
The 2026 Zhangjiajie "Tujia Liuyueliu" Folk Culture Carnival was held in Dayong Ancient Town, Zhangjiajie City on July 19. Liuyueliu refers to the sixth day of the sixth Chinese lunar month.
With the theme "Rising with Liuyueliu, Having Fun in Dayong Town," the event aligned with Dayong Ancient Town's positioning of "youthfulness and immersive experiences." It integrated traditional Tujia folk customs with trendy activities, innovatively creating immersive cultural tourism scenarios, injecting new vitality into traditional folk culture for the modern era.
The event featured three major sections and six themed activities, offering a comprehensive showcase of the folk customs of Tujia people. The three sections, namely, Dance Show, Skill Show, and Strength Show, corresponded to six themed activities—a citywide display of old objects, street performances of intangible cultural heritage, a shoulder pole strength competition, a folk customs parade, a Nuo Mask culture gathering, and a summer water-splashing carnival.
The Dance Show section kicked off with the sounding of ox-horn trumpets. Red silk and Xilankapu, a traditional Tujia brocade, cascaded down, accompanied by brilliant performances of Tujia folk dances. An old farming tools exhibition recreated the life of Tujia ancestors.
The Skill Show section featured concentrated displays of various intangible cultural heritage forms. Daliuzi, Three-stick Drum, and Yongding Yang Opera were staged in rotation, alongside live shows of the Tujia crying marriage custom and interactive experience of Nuo Mask painting.
At the Strength Show section, participants competed in shoulder pole challenges, vying for the title of "Strongman of Dayong Ancient Town."
The event introduced innovative upgrades. Dedicated non-player characters interacted with visitors throughout the event, along with parade shows and photo opportunities tied to the "Monster Hunt" film franchise. In the evening, vibrant activities constantly ignited the summer night vibe in this ancient town, such as folk customs parade, flash mob of hand-waving dance, Nuo Mask gathering, and water-splashing carnival.
Along the riverside area of the ancient town, a gourmet and cultural creative fair was set up, offering a dazzling array of local specialties such as glutinous rice cakes, Hezha (a traditional Tujia bean-curd dish), and iced sweet rice wine. Intangible cultural heritage experience activities, including Xilankapu brocade handcrafting, silver ornament forging, and tie-dyeing, along with a folk treasure exhibition, attracted numerous visitors.
