Hunan Zhangtou Puppetry

Puppetry is one of China's ancient theatrical art forms, deeply embedded in the country's cultural heritage. Among these is Hunan zhangtou puppetry, also known as Hunan rod puppetry, a national intangible cultural heritage item that showcases distinctive characteristics across various areas of central China's Hunan Province.

In this art form, the rod puppet is supported by a central rod attached to the puppet's head, with side rods connected to its hands. The puppeteer skillfully uses both hands to animate the puppet, bringing it to life with captivating performances.

Hunan Zhangtou Puppetry was shortlisted for the first batch of the provincial-level intangible cultural heritage items in 2006, and the first batch of national-level intangible cultural heritage items in 2008.
