Hunan Province is devoted to improving national physique and health levels, with mass sports on the increase, competitive sports achieving a historical breakthrough, the sports industry developing rapidly, and the legal system concerning sports constantly strengthened.



From 1949 to 2008, sportsmen in Hunan won 14 world championships, 6 Asian championships and 31 state championships. In 2000 Sydney Olympic Games, 8 athletes from Hunan won seven gold medals. In 2008 Beijing Olympic Games, the famous gymnast, Li Xiaopeng, won two gold medals for the second time and the young weightlifter, Long Qianquan, became the youngest weightlifting Olympic Champion. In 2012 London Olympic Games, 3 gold medals were achieved by Hunanese athletes.By the end of 2014, the province witnessed 8 World Champions, 18 Asian Champions and 49 National Champions.



The Nationwide Physical Fitness activities were launched extensively throughout the Province's primary and secondary schools, enterprises and institutions. Successful experiences have been accumulated in competitive sports in Hunan Province.


The province carried out abundant mass fitness programs with a regular participation of 23.996 million. In 2016, more than 10,000 sports ground and venues were built, reaching a total number of 98,684, including 220 gymnasiums, 7,296 playgrounds, 543 swimming pools, and 4,527 training rooms.


According to the 13th Five-Year Plan for Hunan Sports Development unveiled on June 2016, initiatives should be taken to give full play of sports industry's role in channeling private funds to sports industry development and to incorporate it into Hunan's overall planning of service industry. The province will formulate a scientific plan for sports development to strengthen construction of sports industrial park, industrial base (demonstration unit and demonstration project). Featured sports industry in line with local conditions is highly encouraged.


The Plan stressed integrated development between sports and related industries. Efforts should be taken to promote the integration among sports, healthcare industry, sports culture creativity industry, advertising and media, and further drive the development of sports media, sports advertising and sports exhibition. The sports industry will have created an output value of over 100 billion yuan by 2020.
