[National Geographical Indication Products] Chengbu Cyclocarya Paliurus Tea

Cyclocarya paliurus tea of Chengbu Miao Autonomous County was approved by the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine (AQSIQ) as National Geographical Indication Product in January 2016.

Cyclocarya paliurus, a native to eastern and central China, is a genus of flowering plants in the family Juglanaceae. It shows adaptations to all kinds of environment, especially wet valley and depressions. It is a deciduous tree growing to 30 m tall. The foliage is similar to Pterocarya, with pinnate leaves 20-25 cm long with five to eleven leaflets. The leaflets are 5-14 cm long and 2-6 cm broad.

Experimental research on the microelements and hygienical functions of cyclocarya paliurus has been done since 1980s. It has been approved that cyclocarya paliurus boasts richest nutritional ingredients in plant kingdom, of both organic and inorganic nutrition.

It was originally a sweet tea favored by locals for its good taste. Prof. Cao Tieru from Central South University of Forestry and Technology led a group of tens of researchers to Chengbu in 1979. They searched most regions of Chengbu, including Liangjiang Valley area, Dayang, Chang'anying, Lan Rong, Tingping, Dagu, and Weixi townships, and have found a large batch of wild cyclocarya paliurus, which has been approved by the national forestry administration to be the largest group in the world.

Research shows that the organic and inorganic nutrition ingredients in cyclocarya paliurus can help regulate blood sugar level, reduce blood press and blood fat, and improve immunity, and has antioxidant function. After being processed into cyclocarya paliurus tea, it was sold to Liaoning, Beijing, Shandong, Hunan, Guangdong, Fujian, and Taiwan. It enjoyed high popularity with locals and in these places.
