Yiyang City is known as a famous "hometown of rice and fish" in the Dongting Lake area. It is a major producer of grains, cotton, oil-bearing crops, pigs and other industrial crops. Its ramie accounts for one fourth of the world's production. It is also one of the ten major bamboo-growing areas in China.

Its specialty products, including ramie clothes, hot foodstuffs, cooking oil, bamboo sleeping mats, preserved duck eggs and antimony products, sell well on both domestic and international markets.

The local business environment is being optimized. Improved infrastructure facilities, such as those involving energy, transport and telecommunications, provide better conditions for economic and social development.

International friendship cities:

• Namhae County, South Korea

• Petah Tikva, Israel

• Guarulhos, Brazil

• Salcedo, Dominican Republic (with Yuanjiang)
