Stronger Tiers Empowered by Innovation
Top 100 Hunan Enterprises Chart a New Course for Hunan Industrial Upgrading
A promotion conference on building Hunan into an advanced manufacturing hub was held on June 5, 2026. The meeting announced the lists of Hunan's Top 100 Enterprises, Top 100 Manufacturing Enterprises, and Top 100 Service Enterprises in 2025. A group of "pillar" enterprises, including the Hunan Iron and Steel Group Co., Ltd., China Construction Fifth Engineering Bureau, Hunan Construction Investment Group Co., Ltd., State Grid Hunan Electric Power Company Limited, and SANY Group, made the lists.
The total revenue of Hunan's Top 100 enterprises reached 2.8 trillion CNY, with the entry threshold hitting 5.73 billion CNY. The figures represented increases of 31.57% and 41.1% respectively compared to the end of the 13th Five-Year Plan period (2016-2020).
Assessing the Foundation: Larger Scale, Stronger Backbone, and Greater Contributions
The entry threshold has risen by more than 40%, marking a major leap for Hunan's Top 100 enterprises over the past five years.
The number of members in the "ten-billion-CNY club" increased from 49 to 58, and the number of "hundred-billion-CNY giants" grew from four to seven. Seven "leading geese" have flown into the China Top 500 Enterprises, nine enterprises have entered the China Top 500 Manufacturing Enterprises, and 15 have made it into the China Top 500 Service Enterprises. Moreover, the Hunan Iron and Steel Group Co., Ltd. has secured a position on the Fortune Global 500 list for four consecutive years.
As Hunan enterprises grow larger and their tiers become stronger, their weight on the national and even global industrial map is increasingly significant.
In terms of industrial structure, manufacturing accounts for half of the top ten. Hunan Iron and Steel Group, SANY Group, Zoomlion, Changsha BYD, Lens Technology--these names are both the pride of Hunan's manufacturing and the pillars of the province's advanced manufacturing hub.
Companies in the "new trio" fields—new energy, new materials, and high-end equipment— have shown outstanding performance. Companies like the Hunan Yuneng New Energy Battery Material Co., Ltd., Changsha FinDreams Battery, and Changsha HKC Optoelectronics rank high on the list, reflecting an accelerated shift toward diversified support within Hunan's manufacturing sector.
Traditional, emerging, and future industries are advancing in parallel, making the framework of the modern industrial system more robust.
Innovation is fast becoming a hallmark of Hunan's enterprises. The total R&D investment of the Top 100 enterprises exceeded 65 billion CNY, with an average R&D intensity of 2.43%. Among them, 39 enterprises had an R&D intensity exceeding 3%, a net increase of five from the previous year. The substantial financial investments and breakthroughs in independent technologies are continuously increasing the value added by "Made in Hunan."
Top 100 enterprises have never been absent in fulfilling social responsibilities. With nearly 200 billion CNY in tax payments and over 920,000 jobs provided, they serve as the ballast for stabilizing growth and ensuring employment. The fact that six leaders of Hunan enterprises have received the title of National Outstanding Entrepreneur is the best testament to this group's spirit of responsibility.
Notably, productive service industries have become the new engine for the growth of the service sector. It was learned that in the Top 100 Service Enterprises list, the number of enterprises in such fields as finance, logistics, information technology, and business services is increasing, indicating a deepening integration of Hunan's productive service with advanced manufacturing industries. In contrast, the number of listed enterprises in traditional consumer service industries, such as trade, accommodation, and catering, has decreased, showing an optimization and upgrading of the internal structure of the service sector.
Looking Ahead: Accelerated Industrial Upgrading with Surging Waves of Innovation
The lists are not just report cards but also indicators of direction. Through the progression and evolution of the Top 100 enterprises, three major trend signals are clearly released.
The construction of the advanced manufacturing hub is transitioning from "gaining momentum" to "achieving substantial progress." Compared to the end of the 13th Five-Year Plan period (2016-2020), the number of ten-billion-CNY manufacturing enterprises has increased significantly. Leveraging the solid foundation of Hunan's five national advanced manufacturing clusters and 22 national-level characteristic industrial clusters for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), enterprises in fields such as construction machinery, rail transit, electronic information, new materials, and new energy are performing more brilliantly. Companies like the CRRC Zhuzhou Institute Co., Ltd. and Changsha BYD are growing rapidly, and key products like the full IGBT industrial chain and automotive display panels have broken foreign monopolies, reflecting the transition of Hunan's modern industrial system from blueprint to reality.
Innovation is spreading from point-based breakthroughs to broader application. The addition of five enterprises with R&D intensity exceeding 3% within one year is not accidental but signifies a qualitative change in enterprises' innovation consciousness, shifting from "being compelled to innovate" to "wanting to innovate." During the 14th Five-Year Plan period (2021-2025), Hunan's cumulative research funding exceeded 55 billion CNY, and 1,768 key technologies were conquered. A number of specialized and sophisticated "little giant" enterprises and single champion enterprises have become the main force of innovation in niche tracks. Companies like Anker Innovations, Truking Technology, and CEC Great Wall have continuously increased innovation investment; overcome technical difficulties in fields like consumer electronics, biomedicine, and information technology application innovation industries; and, polished their own brands.
The regional development pattern is shifting from reliance on a single core to broader, multi-point growth. The Changsha-Zhuzhou-Xiangtan area remains the main agglomeration area for Top 100 enterprises, with strong "siphon effect" as the core engine. However, characteristic industrial clusters in other cities are also accelerating their growth, such as UHV power transmission and transformation in Hengyang, petrochemical new materials in Yueyang, lithium battery new materials in Chenzhou, biomedicine in Changde, MLCC electronic components in Yiyang, and medical devices in Xiangtan. A number of "new industrial forces" with distinctive features is rising.
Consumer-facing enterprises in the Top 100 Service Enterprises, such as the State Grid Hunan Electric Power, Bank of Changsha, Yifeng Pharmacy, Laobaixing Pharmacy, and Aier Eye Hospital, have grown steadily, reflecting the resilience and vitality of the domestic demand market. A new pattern of the regional economy, characterized by one leading core and multiple supporting points, has been rapidly taken shape across Hunan.
