Hunan builds Five lnternational Loristies Channels and Freirht Assembly Centers

In the beginning of 2024, Hunan Governor Mao Weiming stressed giving priority to the building of five international logistics channels and freight assembly centers, namely:

A northward channel linking to Europe and Central Asia based on the China-Europe freight train service centered in Changsha City;

An eastward channel dovetailed with the integrated development of the Yangtze River Delta based on the river-sea intermodal transport service centered in Yueyang;

A southward channel connecting with the maritime transport routes between the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area and Africa based on the Hunan-Guangdong-Africa rail-sea intermodal transport service centered in Zhuzhou;

A westward channel linking with ASEAN based on the Huaihua International Land Port centered in Huaihua; and,

An aerial channel acting as a regional air hub of the RECP countries and a freight and passenger transport hub oriented to Africa based on the international air freight service centered in Changsha.

The Information Office of the Hunan Provincial People’s Government announced in June that:
[Changsha] China-Europe Express Rail

The China-Europe Express Rail is a kind of international freight train service linking China with Europe and other countries in the Belt and Road Initiative. Trains on each fixed route run with a fixed train number and a fixed timetable.

On October 30, 2014, Hunan launched its first direct freight train service to Europe—the Hunan-Europe Freight Train Service. For the first time in history, Hunan could transport cargo directly to Central Europe.

Two years later, the Hunan-Europe freight train service was incorporated into the China-Europe Express Rail management.

As an important trade channel connecting Hunan and the Belt and Road countries, the China-Europe (Changsha) freight train service has been in operation for 10 years. Currently, there are 14 regular routes, linking Hunan with nearly 30 countries and regions in Eurasia. In 2023, Changsha handled more than 1,000 China-Europe freight trains, standing at the national forefront for five consecutive years.

[Yueyang] Chenglingji Port River-Sea Intermodal Transport Service

The Yueyang Chenglingji Port is a comprehensive hub port connecting to the mainstream and tributaries of the middle reaches of the Yangtze River, providing multimodal transportation service. As the only national first-class port in Hunan Province, Yueyang Chenglingji gives access to the four main streams in Hunan through Dongting Lake, linking a number of counties and cities of the province. Moreover, it has access to southwestern China and the coastal regions through the Yangtze River. This port is a crucial nexus for Hunan in dovetailing with the Yangtze River Economic Belt and several urban economic circles. The Hunan government has given long-term priority to the construction of the Yueyang Chenglingji Port, developing it into a river-sea intermodal transport assembly center and a comprehensive shipping logistics center on the middle reaches of the Yangtze River.

Chenglingji Port has been operating ship routes to Japan, South Korea, and Australia, and opened a route to Russia in July 2023. The volume of freight processed through its international container terminal has reached new levels every year—600,000 TEUs in 2021, one million in 2022, and 1.2 million in 2023. The 2024 goal is to reach 1.5 million.

[Zhuzhou] Hunan-Guangdong-Africa Rail-sea Intermodal Train Service

The Hunan-Guangdong-Africa rail-sea intermodal train service began operation in September 2021. The service offers China's first international logistics passage based on Africa-bound rail-sea intermodal train service. Departing from the CRRC Zhuzhou Logistics Park, the trains reach Nansha, Yantian, and Shekou ports in Guangzhou along the Beijing-Guangzhou Railway. Then, the goods are transferred to the Asia-Pacific region, the Middle East, Africa, and Latin America by ocean-going cargo ships.

Over the past three years, the Hunan-Guangdong-Africa rail-sea intermodal trains have maintained efficient operation with rapidly increasing trips. Only 10 trips were made from September to December of 2021. In 2022, the number of trips reached 242. This figure nearly doubled to 460 in 2023, and has surged to 288 in the first half of this year. It is anticipated that 500 train trips will be made in total during the whole year of 2024.

[Huaihua] Huaihua-ASEAN Freight Train Service

Huaihua is the only important node city in Hunan included in the national development strategy of the New International Land-Sea Trade Corridor, and functions as an international freight assembly center connecting to ASEAN countries.

Launched on January 6, 2022, the Huaihua-Vientiane international freight train on the China-Laos Railway was launched. It was the first international freight train to ASEAN starting from central China.

The Huaihua International Land Port has actively expanded freight sources, collecting cargoes from within and around Hunan and enhancing cooperation with neighboring provinces such as Hubei, Jiangxi, and Yunnan. The Port has broadened the channels to "go global", with its freight service reaching 97 ports and stations in 40 countries and regions around the world. It has handled 221 kinds of goods in 16 categories, with the export of the "new three"—new energy vehicles (NEVs), lithium-ion batteries, and photovoltaic products—steadily growing. The Port has boosted collaboration with coastal ports. Beibu Gulf Port, Guangzhou Port, Yantian Port, and Yangpu Port have set up inland ports in Huaihua successively. Some international shipping companies, such as the China COSCO Shipping Corporation Limited, have set up container returning spots in Huaihua, allowing foreign trade enterprises to take delivery or return the containers nearby.
