A Guide to Escape Summer Heat in Changsha

During the Sanfutian (hottest days of summer), how should you plan your time? Here is a list of great places to visit for free.


Hunan Museum


The Hunan Museum features 27,000 square meters of exhibition space and a collection of over 180,000 artifacts. It offers a variety of events and exhibitions, showcasing history and art. 


Visitors can explore the wonders of Mawangdui, admire exquisite bronzes dating back to Shang and Zhou dynasties, appreciate the poetic beauty of Changsha Kiln porcelain, and immerse themselves in rich history and civilization.

Opening Hours: July 1 - August 31, 2025 (closed on Mondays) 


Daily opening hours are extended until 20:30 (last entry at 20:00).

Changsha Museum


The Changsha Museum boasts a rich collection of over 60,000 pieces (sets) of artifacts, spanning from the Paleolithic Era to the modern and contemporary periods. The collection features distinct highlights, including bronzeware from Shang and Zhou dynasties, artifacts from the Chu-Han period, Changsha Kiln porcelain from the Tang dynasty, calligraphy and paintings by renowned figures from Hunan, and modern and contemporary revolutionary artifacts, which together trace the historical and cultural development of Changsha.

Hunan Museum of Geology


The Hunan Museum of Geology is the largest free natural science museum in Hunan, with an exhibition area of 8,000 square meters. The museum houses over 20,000 artifacts and features six major exhibition halls: Mysteries of the Earth, Geology and Mineral Resources, Natural Ecology, Evolution of Life, Minerals and Gems, and Surveying and Geographic Information. These halls comprehensively showcase the diversity of nature, the splendor of mineral crystals, the mysteries of the Earth, and the vastness of the universe, covering topics such as the Earth’s fundamental properties, geological processes, mineral resources, and biological evolution.

Changsha Jiandu Museum


The Changsha Jiandu Museum houses a collection of over 100,000 bamboo slips dating from the Kingdom of Wu of the Three Kingdoms period. Like historical "memory cards," these slips hold the codes of civilization and tell stories of family and nation.

Hunan Art Museum 


The architectural layout of the museum draws its inspiration from the Xiangjiang, Zijiang, Yuanjiang, and Lishui rivers in Hunan. The main building features custom-made terracotta panels in ochre and white colors that blend seamlessly with the surrounding environment. The museum comprises exhibition areas, public service areas, academic seminar spaces, collection management areas, and office spaces.

Li Zijian Art Museum


The Li Zijian Art Museum is a comprehensive art museum that integrates culture, art, and tourism. At the lakeside café of the museum, as you sip a cup of hand-brewed coffee, you can transit from the themes of "humanity and love" depicted in the oil paintings to the shimmering waters of the lake in the real world.

Changsha Meteorological Science Museum


The Changsha Meteorological Science Museum features six exhibition halls: the Main Hall, the Meteorological Exploration Hall, the Meteorological Applications Hall, the Meteorological Briefing Hall, the Meteorological Broadcasting Hall, and the Aerospace Hall. Utilizing modern technologies such as sound, light, projection, and electronics, the museum presents 23 exhibits, including "Wind and Clouds on Earth," the "Meteorological Warning Corridor," "Space, Ground, and Air-Based Systems," the "Interstellar Corridor," and an "Aerospace Model Display."

Opening Hours: Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays, 9:30–11:30 and 14:30–16:30

Hunan Botanical Garden 


The garden features 10 distinct sections, including the Plant Taxonomy Area, Rare and Endangered Plants Area, Medicinal Plants Area, and Ornamental Plants Area. It also houses specialized gardens such as the "Osmanthus Garden," "Tea Garden," "Cherry Blossom Garden," and "Bird Garden."

Yuelu Mountain


Yuelu Mountain towers majestically to the west of Changsha, with the mighty Xiangjiang River flowing from south to north at its base. 


Yuelu Mountain is renowned for its lush forests, picturesque valleys, and deep ravines. Its scenery is delightful year-round, and every corner exudes poetic charm.

Orange Isle


Orange Isle has been renowned since ancient times. Nestled peacefully in the heart of the Xiangjiang River, it resembles a green boat that has floated for a thousand years, gliding through a tapestry of mountains and waters and delicately weaving together the past and present secrets of Changsha.

You can hike at dawn and savor the poetry of the wind, enjoy lunch and soothe your soul with delicious food. Then you can spend the afternoon exploring a museum to broaden your horizons, and later catch the sunset from a ferry in the evening and enjoy spicy crayfish and the river breeze at night.
