Lixia, or Start of Summer, is the seventh of the 24 solar terms on the Chinese lunar calendar. It falls on May 5 this year. Lixia marks a seasonal transition—from spring to summer. From then on, days become longer, temperatures rise steadily, and crops flourish, bringing hopes for a bountiful harvest.

A Little Pond

by Yang Wanli (Song Dynasty)

Tr. Xu Yuanchong

The fountain mute

won't let the streamlet slip away;

Trees love soft shadows

in clear water on fine day.

The little lotus bloom

has just shown its tip so slight,

When all at once

you see a dragonfly alight.
