According to a press conference held in Huaihua on August 19, the 2026 ICF Dragon Boat World Cup will be held from September 25 to 27 on the Yuanjiang River in Yuanling County, Huaihua. Currently, nearly 600 athletes in 26 teams from 18 countries and regions worldwide have registered for the competition, making it the largest-ever edition.
As a Category A event organized by the International Canoe Federation (ICF), the Dragon Boat World Cup has been held in places such as Zigui in Hubei Province, and Chifeng in Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, since its inauguration in Zhejiang's Ningbo in 2019. This year's event will take place in Hunan, marking the first time this top-tier international dragon boat competition is to be held in the province.
Yuanling is renowned as the "Hometown of Traditional Chinese Dragon Boats" and is an important birthplace of dragon boat racing culture. Dr. Wai-Hung Luk, chair of the ICF Dragon Boat Committee, noted at the press conference, "Holding the World Cup at the birthplace of dragon boats is not only the hosting of a top-tier event, but also the return of cultural roots." Huaihua enjoys a long history of dragon boat tradition, and places such as Yuanling, Mayang, and Xupu still preserve ancient dragon boats of various forms and unique racing customs, with Yuanling's dragon boat racing listed as a national intangible cultural heritage item. The dragon boat spirit—embodied by the saying, "Better to lose a plot of land than a boat race"—has long been ingrained in local people's hearts.
This year's event features a bold innovation in its race format, introducing a 14-kilometer marathon for the first time. The course begins at Er'you Mountain, goes downstream along the Youshui River, and ends at the Dragon Boat Square. This distance sets a new record for the longest race in international dragon boat competitions, presenting an ultimate challenge to the competitors' endurance and teamwork. In addition, the event retains the 200-meter and 500-meter straight sprint races and the 2,000-meter circuit race, allowing athletes from various countries to enjoy the scenic beauty of Yuanling while cutting through the waves. During the event, the "2026 China Dragon Boat Culture Exhibition" will also be held, bringing together competitive sports and traditional culture on one stage to share the story of Chinese dragon boat racing with the international community.
