Hunan Wins Top Honors in Team and Individual Abacus Events

Hunan Posts Historic Best Performance at Abacus and Mental Arithmetic Contest of WAAMA

Recently, the 9th Competition of the Abacus and Mental Arithmetic of the World Association of Abacus and Mental Arithmetic (WAAMA) was held in Beijing. The Hunan team demonstrated unity, hard work, and a spirit of perseverance and determination, winning top honors including the first prize in the team contest and achieving its best-ever result.

The competition featured 28 teams and 254 participants from 11 countries and regions, including China, Australia, Malaysia, Russia, and South Korea, making it the largest-ever event. The competitors were divided into five groups—Group of player, Group A, Group B, Group C and Group D—with both team and individual awards.

Hunan sent 15 contestants to compete in the events of Group of player, Group A, and Group C, with the youngest being only 7 years old. After intense competition, the Hunan team won the first prize in the team contest of the above-mentioned three categories, tying for first place nationally with two other provincial and municipal teams. The Hunan team also secured 12 individual first prizes in the individual contest, ranking second nationally in the number of individual award winners. Additionally, one contestant from Hunan, representing the Chinese Abacus and Mental Arithmetic Association's national team, won three first prizes in the individual contest and helped the national team win the special prize in the team contest of the Group of player.

Chinese abacus arithmetic is an important part of fine traditional Chinese culture. In 2013, it was inscribed on the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
