The Dongting Grand Bridge, the second suspension bridge after the Anzhai Grand Bridge, was open to traffic on the morning of Feb. 1, 2018. It marks the whole line of Hangzhou-Ruili Expressway opening to traffic. The expressway was expected to relief traffic pressure on the Beijing-Hong Kong-Macao and Changsha-Zhangjiajie expressways during the Spring Festival travel peak.

The expressway starts from Hangzhou City of Zhejiang Province, passes through Anhui, Jiangxi, Hubei, Hunan, and Guizhou provinces, and finally ends in Ruili City of Yunnan Province. It is an east-west trunk road in the national expressway network, consisting of such expressways as Dajie-Yueyang, Yueyang-Changde, Changde-Jishou, Jishou-Fenghuang, and Fenghuang-Daxing.
