The China National Tourism Administration (CNTA) announced the second batch of national region-based tourism demonstration zones recently. Hunan’s 18 cities (counties/district) were included in the list, namely, Huaihua City, Hengyang’s Nanyue District, Shaoyang’s Chengbu Miao Autonomous County, Yongzhou’s Dong’an, Jiangyong, and Ningyuan counties, Yueyang’s Xiangyin and Linxiang counties, Chenzhou’s Zixing, Rucheng, and Yizhang counties, Changsha’s Liuyang City, Ningxiang and Changsha counties, Yiyang’s Anhua and Taojiang counties, Zhuzhou’s Liling City, and Loudi’s Lianyuan City.

Initiated in January 2016 by the CNTA, the construction of national region-based tourism demonstration zones aims to transform tourism from “tourist destination” to ”tour around the destination”, build a new tourism development pattern and foster its role as a strategic pillar industry.

All the cities (counties/district) included on the list will enjoy priority to be integrated into central and local budget, tourism investment projects, national tourism promotion program, national pilot demonstration area for tourism reform and innovation, national tourism brand building (such as 4A level scenic spot), and important connections of the CNTA, and carry out tourism infrastructure construction, tourism diplomacy and promotion activities, and tourism personnel training.

Background Information:
Region-based tourism sees an administrative region as a scenic area where all sectors, all departments and all residents are actively involved to make full use of all the local tourist attractions to create a rich travel experience for visitors and meet their diverse needs.

Region-based tourism is an important concept for regional development in the new era. It highlights the advancement of overall regional development via tourism, emphasizes the transformation from “tourist destination” to “tour around the destination”, from tourism industry to tourism economy, from “focus on natural landscape” to “focus on overall environment”, from "a quick glance over tourist attractions" to “in-depth travel experience”, and reflects ideas of “treating visitors as locals and locals as visitors”, and “tourism development by all and for all.” (Source:
