KUNMING, Sept. 17 (Xinhua) -- A class teaching techniques to restore ancient Tibetan books kicked off on Wednesday in Kunming, capital of southwest China's Yunnan Province.

The two-week course has welcomed more than 50 students from ancient book protection departments in the Tibetan Autonomous Region, Tibetan-inhabited prefectures, and counties in Yunnan, Sichuan, Gansu and Qinghai provinces.

Teaching is carried out through practical demonstration, with experts in Yunnan showing students how to restore ancient books selected from the Tibetology institute in Yunnan's Deqen Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture.

The class is designed to help students master restoration techniques for ancient Tibetan books, in order to preserve and restore books in their own regions and promote the cultivation of talent and the protection of such books nationwide, said Su Pinhong, office director of the China National Center for Preservation and Conservation of Ancient Books.

In recent years, Yunnan has conducted restoration work on ancient books in languages of various ethnic groups. It has repaired 2,285 pages of Tibetan Buddhist sutra, 14,080 pages of ancient books in the Yi language, 490 pages in the Dongba language, and 360 pages in the Dai language, said Ma Yunchuan, director of the Yunnan ancient book protection center.
