Hunan’s Patent Applications Close to 50,000 in First Half

Hunan has seen a steady development of intellectual property right protection. The Hunan Administration for Market Regulation announced on July 20 that, in the first half of 2020, Hunan has applied for 49,771 patents, increasing by 10.99% year on year; and, gained 34,063 patents, increasing by 35.66%. By the end of June, Hunan has 50,651 patents. The number of patents granted per 10,000 persons was 7.32. The international patent application under the PCT (Patent Cooperation Treaty) amounted to 214.

Enterprises show a stronger sense of innovation. There were 880 more enterprises filing patent applications between January and June, totaling 4,660. The top three applicants of invention patents were the China Railway Construction Heavy Industry Corporation Limited (CRCC), the CRRC Zhuzhou Locomotive Co., Ltd., and the State Grid Hunan Electric Power Company Limited. The AECC South Industry Co., Ltd., the Zhuzhou Times New Material Technology Co., Ltd., and the CRRC Zhuzhou Locomotive were the top three in terms of the number of the granted patents.

Impacted by suspension of opening amid the epidemic, patent applications by universities and colleges decreased by 9.11%, and their proportion in Hunan’s total was 3.81% less than last year. The top three universities in terms of the numbers of patent applications and grants were Central South University, National University of Defense Technology, and Hunan University.

Regionally, Changsha, Zhuzhou, Hengyang, Shaoyang, and Xiangtan were leading in the province in patent applications and grants. By the end of June, Changsha-Zhuzhou-Xiangtan area had 40,122 patents of invention, accounting for 79.21% of the province’s total. The number of patents granted per 10,000 persons was 26.21.
