Changsha, April 18 (China News Service)—— with the launch of the forum symbol—the Sundial of the World, the 2009 International Cooperation on Resources and Environment is officially declared open in Changsha, Hunan, China. Over 500 renowned governmental leaders, seniors from well-known enterprises, experts in environmental protection, etc. gather on the Orange Islet to plan for a better future of mankind.
The Launch of the Sundial of the World on the Orange Islet
The Sundial of the World is co-launched by nine representatives from government, enterprises and the general public. Its diameter is 3.4 meters, evolving from an ancient timing device—the traditional sundial of China, symbolizing that time and tide wait for no man in the environmental protection cause. It is composed of three rings, the inner, the central and the outer one, symbolizing government, enterprises and the general public separately, and meanwhile, it also symbolizes direction, appeal and responsibility respectively. On the central circle is a map of the earth, the place where we mankinds live, a happy echo of the subject matter of this international forum, that is: Our World, Our Life.
Zhang Chunxian, Secretary of Hunan Provincial CPC Committee says that currently the global financial crisis still can not see its ending, therefore the confidence in economic development and environmental protection is faced with severe challenges. With the increasingly deteriorating environment and its downward carrying capacity, etc., the task to achieve sustainable development is thus urgent and time-pressing. However, Hunan will take active measures, with energy saving and environment protection as the focus of its governmental financial investment, constantly increase the social awareness of environment protection, encourage the circles of industry and commerce to join it, co-propelling the forward development of the cause of energy saving and environment protection.
To reduce the emission of greenhouse gases is vital to environmental protection. Nuclear power, as a technically mature, safe and highly effective clean energy, is greatly valued by nations across the world. Kang Rixin, General Manager of China National Nuclear Corporation, notes that the cycle industry of China’s nuclear fuel has realized great-leap-forward development; meanwhile, technology and capacity are both improving. Kang suggests that the nuclear power be vigorously developed to contribute to the ‘Two-oriented’ society construction.
Wang Zhongyu, Former Vice President of National Committee of the CPPCC and Chairman of the China Enterprise Federation, says that the enterprise, as a link in human’s ecological system, can not restrict itself as simply the main part of resource-coordination and fortune-maker, but it is more preferred to be a representative of energy efficiency and environmental protection. As Wang says, we should integrate the concept of sustainable development in the business operation so as to safeguard the balance between mankind and ecological nature.
