June 5 is the World Environment Day. On the same day, the “Rural Water Environment Improvement in the Dongting Lake Basin of Hunan Province”, a Chinese-Japanese inter-governmental friendly technical cooperation project, held the results report conference in Changsha. The project has been implemented for three years.

The project is one of the examples of scientific and technological cooperation in the water environment between Hunan Province and Shiga Prefecture, Japan. It was funded by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), worth 29 million JPY (about 1.75 million CNY). During the implementation process, Japanese experts were sent to China for 25 times and for 164 days in total. The Chinese counterpart also sent 4 groups of backbone technicians with 24 study and exchange trips made in Japan. Activities included management methods and experience sharing; technical exchange, and environmental education and training; water quality testing equipment donation; environmental education course design, and, environmental education practice.

Many participants were benefited from the project, including Guangming Village, Wangcheng District, Changsha; Sanyantang Village, Yujiang City, Yiyang; Binjiang School Attached to Hunan Normal University (HNNU); High School Attached to HNNU and Bocai Experimental Middle School. For example, after implementing garbage sorting in Guangming Village, the monthly garbage volume of the whole village has reduced from the previous 60 tons to less than 10 tons. The “3 Tanks, 1 Wetland, and 1 Ditch” technology has also been fully promoted. This year, all the 3 septic tanks and 6 ecological intercepting ditches of more than 3,000 meters will be completed. This will effectively solve the rural water pollution caused by direct discharge of domestic sewage.

It was said that the meeting was jointly instructed by the Science and Technology Department of Hunan Province, the Foreign Affairs Office of the Hunan Provincial People's Government, the JICA China Office, and the Shiga Prefecture Biwa Lake Environment Department. It was undertaken by the Hunan Provincial Water Resources Research and Utilization Cooperation Center and a Japanese environmental protection company.
