Waxberry Picking in Hunan

Baiguo Orchard

Covering an area of 1,100 mu (about 73.3 ha.), Baiguo Orchard is an ecological park integrating sightseeing and recreations. Waxberry and loquat season begins in June.

Picking time: June-July
Location: near Leifeng Avenue, Wangcheng District, Changsha

How to get there: take Bus No. 918, or w111, or w204, or w207 to the orchard directly 

 

Baisha Town, Changsha County

Baisha Town has an 8,000-mu (533.3 ha.) fruit plantation. Waxberry is the main produce. Visitors are encouraged to pick the waxberries by themselves, and pay for what they pick.

Transportation: About one hour drive from downtown Changsha to Baisha Town

Kaiyuan Family Farm

Kaiyuan Family Farm is free from insecticides and chemical fertilizers. Lawn mower is adopted. The acid and potassic fertilizer-free soil here is suitable to plant waxberry.

Jingzhou Miao and Dong Autonomous County

 

Jingzhou farmers traditionally plant waxberry trees. Most waxberry plantations are in Mudong and Xiangshui villages, Aoshang Town. The 2017 Hunan-Jingzhou Waxberry Festival kicked off on June 11, and invited visitors to taste and pick delicious and juicy waxberries.

 

You may find that farmers prefer the waxberries atop the trees. These waxberries are big and sweet because of rich sunlight. Picking and tasting areas dot Aoshang Town.

In addition to waxberry picking, you may also visit the Yangmei Eco-museum nearby, taste farmhouse food at Taiyangping Township (village), enjoy folk songs at Disun Miao Village, and spend a night at a Miao family, or, camp at Paiya Mountain Forest Park. Departing from Jingzhou waxberry plantations, a 15-minute drive would leads to Taiyangping Township, 40-minute drive to Paiya Mountain, and 50-munite drive to Disun Miao Village.

Fengping Village

Fengping villagers in Hecheng District, Huaihua, has planted waxberries for more than 1,000 years. There are more than 10 waxberry trees aged over 400 years. Now the waxberry planting area reaches 50,000 mu (about 333 ha.), with an estimated annual output of 350,000 kg.

You may enjoy a "Helong Banquet" featuring Dong culture in Zhijiang Dong Cultural Town. "Helong Banquet", the highest Dong etiquette for distinguished guests, gathers all the participants to enjoy dinner along a long table. For a two-day trip, the original Japanese Surrender Acceptance site in Zhijiang County, Hongjiang Ancient Commercial Town, and Qianyang Ancient Town are recommended.

Yizhang County, Chenzhou

Located in southern Hunan, Yizhang County usually harvests waxberry earlier than other places in Hunan. Yuxi Town’s Shuijinwo Village has the largest waxberry plantation area in southern Hunan, covering 12,000 mu (800 ha.). The annual production is 17.5 million kg.

It is about one hour drive from Shuijinwo Village to Mangshan National Forest Park. The park is a good place to escape summer heat.

Xinhua County, Loudi

 

Xinhua County enjoys a long history of planting waxberry (myrica rubra/yangmei). Since ancient times, the locals plant waxberry trees around their houses. Now there are 50,000 mu (about 3,333 ha.) waxberry plantations.

There are large waxberry plantations in Tianzishan, Maojialong, and Shizhu villages at northern Xinhua. Picking is available at a discount.

Meishan Cave, located in the north of downtown Xinhua County, is not far away from these waxberry plantations. It is well-known for its karst landscape and underground river.
