17th “Chinese Bridge” Contestants Visit Confucius Institute Headquarters

The 17th “Chinese Bridge” Foreign College Student Chinese Proficiency Competition welcoming ceremony was held at the Confucius Institute Headquarters (Hanban) on July 4, 2018. A total of 152 foreign contestants from 118 countries were invited to attend. 
 
Confucius Institute Headquarters Deputy Chief Executive and Hanban Deputy Director-General Zhao Guocheng attended the event and delivered a speech. He pointed out that the theme of this year's competition is “One World, One Family”, which reflects its core connotation. “Chinese Bridge” has become a platform for young people from all over the world to exchange and learn from each other, and to show the beauty and multicultural exchanges of their respective nationalities. Through this activity, global youth can talk about ideals, build new friendships, and contribute to building a community of shared future for mankind, he added.
 
Candidates also visited the Chinese Culture Experience Hall and the Achievement Exhibition of the Confucius Institutes along the “Belt and Road” countries at the Confucius Institute Headquarters. They engaged in multimedia interaction, taking group photos, and wearing Peking opera costumes to experience play characters. Young people from different countries communicated with each other in Chinese, and enjoyed the unique Chinese Culture tour. 
 
The competition is organized by the Confucius Institute Headquarters (Hanban) and the Hunan Provincial People's Government; undertaken by the Hunan Provincial Department of Education and the Hunan Broadcasting System; and, supported by the Hunan Satellite TV, the Hunan Mass Media Vocational and Technical College, and the Hunan Education TV. Based on language competition and cultural communication, it aims to strengthen interaction between Chinese and foreign youths and “tell China stories well” to the world. 
 
The competition includes the “Cross the Bridge” test (Chinese written exam, speech contest, and talent show); the quarter; semi-; and, finals. On August 4, the finals will be held in Changsha. The global championship, the continent champions, and several individual awards will be selected this year. Top 10 contestants will be awarded the title of “Chinese Language Ambassador”.
