On the morning of Feb. 28, 2017, senior leaders visited an experimental forest farm in Hunan Academy of Forestry, and attended a voluntary tree planting activity with cadres and the masses. The participating leaders included Secretary of the CPC Hunan Provincial Committee and Director of the Standing Committee of the Hunan Provincial People’s Congress Du Jiahao, Deputy Secretary of the CPC Hunan Provincial Committee and Governor of Hunan Province Xu Dazhe, and Chairwomen of the CPPCC Hunan Provincial Committee Li Weiwei.

The theme of the voluntary tree planting activity this year is to reclaim and afforest urban construction wasteland.

Secretary Du called for the study of President Xi Jinping’s important instructions made during a tree planting activity in Beijing, and keen awareness of the necessity of holding such activity in new era. He urged the people to build “green bank”, turning voluntary tree planting activity into a conscious action. Efforts should be made to give full play to the province’s good ecological environment and adhere to green development, so as to accelerate the building of an ecological Hunan with blue sky, green mountains, and clear waters.

A total of 4,242 million trees have been planted by 852 million people since the launching of a voluntary tree planting activity across Hunan. Now Hunan’s forest coverage rate reaches 59.64%, with a living wood growing stock of 526 million cubic meters. The green coverage rate of built-up towns at county level is up to 37.91%.
