On December 28, 2017, the Ministry of Land and Resources and the China National Commission for UNESCO held a conference in Beijing to select China’s 10th batch of world geopark recommendations.

Hunan’s Xiangxi Geopark outperformed the other four rivals and was chosen as one of the two world geopark candidates recommended to the UNESCO in 2019.

The world geoparks are selected by the UNESCO. Presently, there are 35 world geoparks in China. Hunan only has one—Zhangjiajie World Geopark.

Xiangxi Geopark covers 7 counties (cities) in Xiangxi Tujia and Miao Autonomous Prefecture: Jishou, Fenghuang, Guzhang, Huayuan, Baojing, Yongshun, and Longshan. It includes two national geoparks: Wulong Mountain in Longshan County, and Red Stone Forest Park in Guzhang County; and, three provincial geoparks: Dehan in Jishou City, ancient Miaohe River in Huayuan County, and Mengdong River in Yongshun County.

The feature films and application materials submitted by Hunan, Fujian, Chongqing, Guizhou, and Gansu were reviewed by 32 experts. Xiangxi Geopark ranked first with a total score of 3,771 points and an average score of 117.84 points.
