1st World Language Resources Protection Conference Opens

The First World Language Resources Protection Conference opened in Changsha on September 19, 2018. More than 200 officials and experts from over 40 countries and regions attended. 
The Conference is co-sponsored by the United Nation Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), the Chinese Ministry of Education, the Secretariat of National Commission of China for UNESCO, the State Language Commission of China, and the Hunan Provincial People’s Government. The co-organizers are the Hunan Province Language Commission, the Hunan Provincial Department of Education, Changsha Municipal People’s Government, Beijing Language and Culture University, and Hunan University. It is a part of the UN’s “2019 International Year of Indigenous Languages” event, and a landmark achievement of language resources protection in China.
The conference theme is “Impacts of language diversity on the shared future for mankind: language resource protection, application, and promotion”. There are four forums: policies on language and cultural diversity; standards and training of trainers for language resources protection; development, access, and promotion of language recourses; and, measures to be taken to promote linguistic and cultural diversity. 
The main activities include opening and closing ceremonies, plenary meeting, parallel sessions, and culture tours. The parallel sessions will focus on the topics of: new development in the protection of endangered languages; cultural inheritance and language resources; standards for the world atlas of languages; implementation of the action plan of the 2019 International Year of Indigenous Languages in the Asia-Pacific Region; language resources management; and, new tools and technologies for the protection of language resources. 
The Conference will push forward reaching a consensus for protecting language resources and language diversity. A Yuelu Declaration will be drafted for deliberation. The UNESCO will cooperate with Chinese universities and research institutions to organize an expert network. The Conference will provide advices to the language resources protection in the Asia-Pacific Region, and further accelerate the UNESCO member countries to take the protection of language diversity a sustainable development target, so as to facilitate building a community of a shared future for mankind.
