35 Disciplines in Hunan Universities Rank in the Top 1% ESI Globally

According to the latest ESI (Essential Science Indicators) data, Central South University (CSU)’s geoscience discipline is now in the top 1% of ESI global rankings. CSU has 14 disciplines on the list. Its rank rose from number 14 to number 12 among the Chinese universities involved in the national "Double First-Class" Initiative which is a plan to create world-class universities and first-class disciplines.


Hunan's 8 universities have 35 disciplines in the top 1% of the ESI global discipline rankings.

CSU has 14 disciplines:
material science,
engineering science,
clinical medicine,
pharmacology and toxicology,
biology and biochemistry,
neurosciences and behavioristics,
computer science,
molecular biology and genetics,
social sciences (general),
psychiatry and psychology, and,

Hunan University (HNU) has 7:
engineering science,
material science,
computer science,
biology and biochemistry, and,
environmental ecology;

National University of Defense Technology (NUDT) has 4:
engineering science,
computer science, and,
material science;

Xiangtan University (XTU) has 4:
material science,
engineering science, and,

Hunan Normal University has 2:
chemistry, and,
clinical medicine;

Hunan Agricultural University (HUNAU) has 2:
botany and zoological science, and,
agricultural science;

University of South China (USC) has one: clinical medicine.

Changsha University of Science and Technology (CSUST) has one: engineering science.

CSU, HNU, NUDT, and XTU were listed among the ESI’s top 100 Chinese universities rankings.

ESI is based on Clarivate Analytics analytics-based database consisting of more than 10 million records of over 12,000 academic journals around the world. ESI rankings are updated every two months. It is an important and world-recognized indicator evaluating the academic level and influence of universities, academic institutions, and countries and regions.

According to the Implementation Plan of Hunan Province on Promoting the Creation of "Double First-Class" Universities, a university’s ranking in ESI is taken into account. Hunan strives to have 40 disciplines in the ESI top 1% disciplines by 2020.
