Changsha Ranks 68th Worldwide in Urban Economic Competitiveness

On November 12, the National Academy of Economic Strategy of Chinese Academy of Social Sciences (CASS) and the United Nations Programme for Human Settlements (UN-Habitat) jointly released The Global Urban Competitiveness Report 2019-2020: The world’s Changes over 300 Years after Urbanization.
According to the report, Changsha ranked 68th worldwide in terms of urban economic competitiveness this year, up three places from the previous year. It is the third time that Changsha has entered the global top 100 in urban economic competitiveness. In terms of global city classification, Changsha was rated as an international gateway city.
The report selected a global sample of 1,038 cities with a population of more than 500,000, and evaluated these cities’ performance in urban economic competitiveness based on indexes indicating urban economic competitiveness. 
A total of 20 Chinese cities entered the global top 100 ranking of urban economic competitiveness. Changsha 13th in China.
The report also announced the global top 200 ranking of sustainable competitiveness, with 31 Chinese cities included. Changsha’s sustainable competitiveness index was 0.5257, ranking 165th in the world.
For the first time, the report introduced a new standard for global city classification. It classifies 1,006 cities into three tiers, two categories, five levels, and ten degrees. The five levels are: global city (A), international hub city (B), international gateway city (C), regional hub city (D), and regional gateway city (E) from high to low. The 10 degrees are: A+, A, B+, B, C+, C, D+, D, E+, and E.
A total of 26 Chinese cities were rated C or above. Among them, Beijing was A; Shanghai was B+; Hong Kong and Taibei were B; Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Chengdu, and Nanjing were C+; and, 18 cities including Changsha were C. Changsha’s score in global city classification ranked 102nd in the world, and 15th among the 26 Chinese cities with C or above.
