The “Beautiful China Yangtze River Tour—Ecological Yangtze River Economic Belt” online activity Hunan stop kicked off on May 13, 2018. It was hosted by the Office of the Central Cyberspace Affairs Commission and the Ministry of Ecology and Environment, undertaken by offices of cyberspace affairs commission of 11 provinces and cities along the Yangtze River Economic Belt, and assisted by, a Hunan-based news website. Nearly 70 people set foot on the West Dongting Lake National Nature Reserve in Hanshou County, Changde City, Hunan Province to experience the new changes of the Dongting Lake ecology.

The West Dongting Lake Wetland is one of the richest biodiversity areas among China's freshwater wetlands. It is also an important wintering ground for migratory birds in East Asia and a freshwater fish germplasm resource pool in the Yangtze River Basin.

In accordance with the requirements of the Central Environmental Protection Inspection Group and the CPC Hunan Provincial Committee, Changde City and Hanshou County carried out the “black poplar cleanup” activity. It took them 10 days to clear 51,000 mu (3400 ha.) of black poplars in the core area of the reserve. They also enhanced environmental treatment and protection efforts to restore the wetland area. Through this series of measures, the biological diversity of the West Dongting Lake Wetland has been effectively protected, and the population of birds, fish and vegetation has increased, and the wetland function has gradually been restored.
