Hunan’s 2017 Innovation Ability Rankings Announced

With the theme of "Yangtze River Economic Belt and Hunan Innovative Development", the Hunan 2017 Innovative Development Research Report achievements were announced at the Hunan University of Science and Technology on January 21. The 2018 "Innovation Forum" Round Table was held at the same time. The Institute for Hunan Innovation and Development Research announced the 2017 Hunan cities and prefecture innovation achievement rankings. Changsha, Zhuzhou, and Yueyang took the first three places.

The report analyzed Hunan’s achievements in integrating the development of Yangtze River Economic Belt, the major challenges facing Hunan in promoting innovative development, and prospective measures to enhance Hunan innovation efforts.

Hunan’s other cities or prefecture ranking was, in descending order, Changde, Hengyang, Chenzhou, Xiangtan, Yiyang, Shaoyang, Yongzhou, Loudi, Huaihua, Xiangxi Tujia and Miao Autonomous Prefecture, and Zhangjiajie.

Recently years, Hunan has implemented remarkable innovations in integrating into the Yangtze River Economic Belt. New steps have been taken to promote innovation-driven development. Efforts have been made to boost the cluster development of leading industries and facilitate quality capacity go global. An efficient, convenient, and integrated transportation system has been established, and more environmental protection efforts have been made.

Many challenges continue to face Hunan in promoting innovative development. They include lack of innovation funding, insufficient innovation, a need to improve innovative policies and systems, poor synergy among industries, universities and research institutes, and the need for more efforts of green development through innovation.

The institute recommended that Hunan make the following efforts to integrate into the Yangtze River Economic Belt: promote regional cooperation in science and technology innovation so as to learn from advanced experiences; enhance cooperation among industries, universities, and research institutes to deepen synergetic innovation mechanisms; stimulate enterprise innovations to fully release the energy of innovators; optimize regional innovation layout to promote coordinated development; and, finally, speed the progress of the Chang-Zhu-Tan city cluster with the goal of building national-level central cities.
