The Hunan Provincial People’s Government Information Office held a press conference on January 22, 2019. It announced that the 2018 Hunan per capita disposable income was 25, 241 CNY, up 9.3% over the previous year. The growth rate was higher than the national average. The National Bureau of Statistics Survey Office in Hunan released survey data on the Hunan people’s livelihood in 2018. Last year, the province maintained rapidly growing resident income, stable employment, and flourishing consumption. People’s living standards continued to improve.

Hunan’s resident incomes in four major regions have achieved rapid growth. The per capita disposable income of residents in Changsha, Zhuzhou, and Xiangtan area is the highest, reaching 39,274 CNY, an increase of 8.6%; that in the Dongting Lake area and southern Hunan is 22,928 CNY and 23,391 CNY respectively, both with a growth rate of above 9%; and, that in the great western Hunan is less than 20,000 CNY, but its growth rate is as high as 10.3%, topping among the four major regions.

The rural residents’ income grew faster than that of urban residents. The per capita disposable income of urban residents was 36,698 CNY, up 8.1%; while that of rural residents was 14,093 CNY, up 8.9%. The growth rate was especially faster in poorer areas. The per capita disposable income of rural residents in 51 poorer counties was 10,285 CNY, grew by 11%. The gap between urban and rural residents' income has been further narrowed.

The rapid income increase could not be reached without stable employment situation. In 2018, Hunan’s urban unemployment rate was 4.9%. Both the average unemployment time, and the proportion of underemployed people, decreased compared with the previous year.

Income growth drives prosperous consumption. In 2018, the per capita consumption expenditure of Hunan residents was 18,808 CNY, an increase of 9.6%. The survival expenditures such as food, tobacco, and alcohol saw a modest increase, while the improved expenditures such as health care, housing, and transportation, grew quickly.

In 2018, the agricultural production developed steadily. The annual grain output was 60.46 billion jin (30.23 million tons), exceeding 60 billion jin for five consecutive years. By the end of 2018, the number of live pigs in large-scale farms kept rapid increase.
